Câmara de Silves invests in technology to improve the efficiency of its irrigation systems

The objective is to «save water and reduce costs»

Weather stations and soil moisture monitoring probes installed in green spaces and municipal public gardens are helping the Municipality of Silves to apply precision irrigation, making it more efficient, «with the aim of saving water and reducing costs», he announced. the autarchy.

At the end of last year, the municipality purchased tools to support irrigation management, “through the installation of three meteorological stations and soil moisture monitoring probes, using the Environmental Fund of the Economic and Social Stabilization Program (PEES) ».

These measures, which represent an investment of 40 thousand euros, are associated with an irrigation telemetry system that the Municipality is installing throughout the municipality, as part of the Strategic Plan for the Control and Reduction of Water Losses.

The new tools were installed in São Bartolomeu de Messines, in the riverside area of ​​Silves and on a lawn next to the pavilion of the EB2,3. wind speed, making the municipality calculate, with greater precision, the evapotranspiration rates for the place».

«These equipments are of the utmost importance, since, with the whole system working, it will be possible to decide where, when and what is the need for irrigation in the different green areas throughout the county», according to Rosa Palma, Mayor from Silves.

«Each of the meteorological stations allows the municipality to decide the irrigation times, given the weather conditions, and it is also possible, through the remote management system, to receive alerts in the event of conditions conducive to the attack of pests, such as the grass caterpillar. and fungi", he added.
