Loulé City Council unanimously approved this Monday preventive measures, namely the suspension of the Municipal Master Plan (PDM) in the Matos da Picota area, in order to stop the creation of the much-contested waste management unit.

In a statement, the municipality stresses that this is the “third time” that “the Municipality of Loulé has approved preventive measures (with the consequent suspension of the Loulé PDM in force) in order to halt progress in projects that may jeopardize the environment and people's quality of life'.

This Monday, in a city council session, it was unanimously decided to institute this measure "in an area of 8,5 hectares in the area of the former Matos da Picota quarry, where the developer Blueotter Circular SA intends to install a waste management unit", which residents of the area fear that it could become a “dumpster”.

The decision now taken by the Municipality of Loulé is based on the "manifest public interest in safeguarding and protecting the environment of the entire area and public health and also took into account the concerns of the surrounding population, the recommendation of the Municipal Assembly unanimously approved on December 3, 2021, as well as the deliberation of the Chamber of December 20", clarifies the municipality.

The Chamber meeting where the decision was taken

The municipality states that it is aware that “the environmental impacts resulting from the possible installation of industrial activities (namely activities of the nature of the one that, at the present moment, is intended to be installed there), are negative and of great importance, in an area and area that are heavily punished. due to the fact that, for decades, highly polluting industrial units that were harmful to public health have worked there”.

As such, municipal officials emphasize that “the environmental, social and economic damage resulting from the possible alteration of the characteristics of the place are more serious than those inherent to the adoption of these preventive measures”.

With this resolution, the Chamber reinforces that it intends to "adopt the safest way, of all possible, to prevent the installation of equipment that, once in operation, would pose risks to public health and compromise the right to tranquility and a protected and valued environment'.

This proposal, which will now be submitted for consideration by the Municipal Assembly and CCDR Algarve, is “approved for a period of two years, extendable for another one (if necessary)”.

The process for the transformation of the former quarry into a Waste Treatment Center, in Matos da Picota, on the side of Estrada Nacional 270, near Boliqueime, was submitted to the Loulé Chamber in July 2020, but only more than a year later, is that the theme came to the foreSuch as Sul Informação, which consulted the process, reported here.
