IL list head says zip code «should not be decisive factor in school choice»

IL defends that «it should be parents and students who choose their school»

Cláudia Vasconcelos, head of the Liberal Initiative (IL) list for the Algarve in this Sunday's Legislative, simulated the trips that a student living in Tunes or Armação de Pêra has to make to get to the Silves Secondary School, the only one in the county, and concluded that postal code «should not be a decisive factor in choosing a school».

The exercise took place last Monday, January 24th.

Starting from the door of the Escola Secundária de Silves, the IL candidates were divided into two groups. One headed for Tunes and the other for Armação de Pêra. The trips, both around 20 kilometers long, took between 25 and 30 minutes.

Arriving in the center of Tunes and Armação de Pêra, «the same teams headed to the door of the Secondary School of Albufeira, covering about 13 kilometers that took 14 minutes, without using the motorway», says IL.

With this action, the liberals wanted to «demonstrate the importance of the choice of school by parents and students».

«Whether because of its proximity, or because of the quality that they recognize, either as a matter of teaching staff or because of a preference in a certain way of looking at the educational process», IL argues that «it should be the parents and students who choose their school: a postal code must never influence that choice'.

«The lack of knowledge of the region and the lack of coordination and openness of decision-making bodies at the national level in opening options for choosing a school, leads to secondary school students in the municipality of Silves being forced to choose the only secondary school in their municipality. , which is twice the distance and time of the secondary school in the neighboring municipality», he concludes.
