CDU's top list meets with shellfish collectors and nurserymen from Ria Formosa

For the CDU, «the greatest threats to the Ria and the environment are not the men who go to sea or tide every day»

Catarina Marques, the Algarve's first candidate for Legislative Elections, participated yesterday in a contact action at the fishing port of Olhão, with shellfish collectors and nurserymen from Ria Formosa, as part of the pre-electoral campaign.

At this meeting, the CDU had the opportunity to express, before these professionals, that «the Ria Formosa is a valuable natural and environmental heritage existing in the Algarve, but which has been poorly treated by successive governments».

For the CDU, «it is those who live and work in the Ria, particularly the thousands of shellfish gatherers and fishermen, who are most interested in its environmental recovery», as well as «those who are in the best conditions to preserve this important heritage that is also your".

The head of the list Catarina Marques defended, together with the shellfish collectors and nurserymen, “an integrated intervention in the Ria Formosa which, by supporting the economic activities of fishing and shellfishing on which thousands of families depend, ensure public investment in public bodies responsible for protecting and conservation of the Ria Formosa environment, carrying out dredging, combating sources of pollution, supporting traditional productive activities and environmental balance».

The communists consider, in a statement, that "the so-called planning plans for protected areas, in particular that of the Ria Formosa (which led to the demolitions), by opposing traditional habits, practices and activities to nature conservation, generate an incentive to abandon of the territories they aim to protect'.

The CDU claims to reject this perspective, arguing that "it is possible and necessary to reconcile the protection and defense of natural values with the economic, social and cultural development of the resident populations".

For the CDU, «the great threats to the Ria and the environment are not the men who go to sea or the tide every day», but «the enormous pressure of Tourism, the real estate appetites and the great economic interests that look to the Ria Formosa as a new goose that lays the golden eggs».

The communists consider that they have had «a remarkable and permanent intervention in defense of the Ria Formosa: from the fight against demolitions, to proposals in defense of traditional fishing and shellfishing activities, from the safeguarding of species such as the Cavalo Marinho, to the demand for means for public bodies concerned with environmental protection».
