“Baía de Lagos – Comida do Mar”: a book that pays homage to gastronomy and people

A book made thinking about the rich gastronomy of Lagos that is also a tribute to the fishing traditions of the county. Here is the work “Baía de Lagos – Comida do Mar”, presented this Thursday, January 27, at the Auditorio Paços do Concelho Século XXI. 

The book is authored by Patrícia Borges (text) and Nicolas Lemonnier (photography).

In this session, Hugo Pereira, mayor of Lagos, confessed his enthusiasm for this project of «appreciation of our sea and our gastronomy, but also of the recognition of our people, traditions and memories».

«More than a gastronomy book, it is also a praise of our sea, Meia Praia, Vale da Lama and Arte Xávega», he added.

Nicolas Lemonnier, responsible for the photography of the edition, referred to his experience with works in Lagos that awakened in him the desire to create a work that «depicts the unique traditional fishing practiced in Lagos», as well as the recipes that result from it.

Author of the texts and research for the book, Patrícia Borges highlighted the various species found in Lagos and that end up distinguishing the recipes portrayed in relation to the rest of the Algarve, namely fish, molluscs, bivalves and the so “our” condelipas.

Through extensive research, information was compiled on the customs, culture, traditions and fishing arts, with emphasis on the Xávega Art of Meia Praia, currently the only Xávega in the country to use the strength of their arms.

The author also referred to the precious contribution of Lacobrigenses in the production of this book, which is a «tribute to the identity recipes of the region, but also a testimony of mothers and their experience with the sea of ​​Lagos».

The book “Baía de Lagos – Comida do Mar” will soon be available for sale at cultural facilities in the municipality, as well as at the Lagos Tourist Office.
