Artists exhibit in the CHUA cafeteria to help the well-being of health professionals

What impact does art have on health promotion? What effect does culture have on physical and mental well-being? Can art relieve physical and emotional tension?

Until March, five visual artists will exhibit their work in the cafeteria of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), in Faro, in a project that wants to help promote the physical and emotional well-being of all health professionals.

The Application of Faro the European Capital of Culture (Faro 2027), in partnership with Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) and Associação 289 developed this project called “Art for Health”.

This group show includes works by Gustavo Jesus, Milita Doré, Régis Vincent, Fernando Sampaio Amaro and Leandro Marcos, artists who voluntarily and free of charge joined Faro2027 in this initiative.

Gustavo Jesus and Milita Doré have already had their works on display. Currently, the works of Régis Vincent are on display until the 5th of February.

This is followed by Leandro Marcos (8 February to 2 March) and Fernando Sampaio Amaro (5 March and 26 March).

The project started in mid-2021, with the promotion of conversations between the artists of Associação 289 and employees of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve, namely psychologists who were responsible for psychological support lines for health professionals. This phase also included technical visits to the space and project planning meetings.

«One of the most interesting aspects of the project is the possibility given to health professionals to interact with the artist», says Candidatura de Faro the European Capital of Culture.

Through a QR code installed on the tables of the CHUA cafeteria, health professionals can send a message to the artist or answer a question posed by the artist in relation to the works on display.

«The adhesion to the projects has been very positive and it is gratifying to see the artists receive messages thanking them for the exhibition, reporting that with this project the hospital is a better place or even saying that the works of art on display allowed to ease their minds», account Isadora Justo, from Faro2027.

The Art for Health project was inspired by the initiative “Un quadr oal mese: lárte in ospedale” developed at the COVID Hospital OGR ASL, in the city of Turin, Italy.
