The municipality of Albufeira, through Espaço Integrar, will promote on the 14th of February at 09:30 am, through the Zoom platform, the second symposium on “Sexuality in Disability”, this year dedicated to Affections in the Pandemic.
According to the municipality of Albufeira, «many myths and prejudices still hover over the sexuality of people with disabilities, but fortunately these beliefs are gradually beginning to change. One of the most common myths is that people with disabilities are asexual.”
With the objective of «demystifying the aforementioned myths, transmitting knowledge and sharing experiences that aim to draw the attention of all people to the issue of sexuality in disabilities», the municipality of Albufeira brought together, in 2020, at the Lídia Jorge Library, several specialists in area of sexuality and psychology, entities that work in the area and several young people who transmitted their testimony in the first person.
Two years later, the municipality returns to the topic, this time with the very concrete objective of “analyzing how the relationships, dating and affections of the disabled population were affected during the pandemic”.
To this end, the second edition of the symposium, entitled "Sexuality in Disability - Affections during the Pandemic" will take place online, with the opening session in charge of the councilor for Social Action Cláudia Guedelha, and the presentation of the seminar in charge of the technique of the Solange Azevedo municipality.
The first intervention by the group of self-representatives (SPA) of the AAPCDAM – Algarve Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Impaired Children is scheduled, at 10:00 am, which, similarly to what happened in 2020, presents true reports of couples with disabilities, but now telling how they dealt with the separation caused by the pandemic and their reactions to the lack of affection.
This is followed by the interventions of the director of Lar São Vicente da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Albufeira, Suzete Ruivo (at 10:50 am), and the group of the Socio-Occupational Forum of ASMAL - Associação de Saúde Mental do Algarve (at 11:40 am), who will to make known the changes implemented by the respective institutions in order to adapt to new times, as well as the daily work developed with users in the area of affections.
After each intervention, "a period for public intervention is contemplated, where all contributions are welcome, so that together we can reflect on the subject and find the best solutions for the sexual health of those who have physical and psychological constraints", he emphasizes. the autarchy.
