Doctoral thesis written and defended at UAlg wins European award

The doctoral thesis in Language Sciences “Linguistic competence in higher education”, by Elisa Caruso, defended in 2019 at the University of Algarve (UAlg), has just received the 1st prize from the Conseil Européen pour les Langues -European Language Council (CEL ELC).

This is the first edition of this award whose jury is composed of 12 members from universities and research centers from several countries in Europe.

The thesis was supervised by Manuel Célio Conceição, professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences (FCHS), and was developed based on research on multilingualism in higher education, carried out within the scope of the European project Mobility and Inclusion in a Multilingual Europe (MIME), coordinated by the teacher and financed by the 7th framework program of the European Union (with a value of about 5 million euros).

The award received by the Italian student will translate into an invitation to present her work at the CEL Annual Conference, dedicated to the theme "Languages ​​and Rights", as well as a monetary reward, complemented by the possibility of publishing an article in one of the magazines associated with the CEL ELC (International Journal of Language Policy, Sustainable Multilingualism ou verbum).
