Portimão celebrates City Day with Fado Night, Sports Gala and Christmas Concert

The Portimão Council will mark the 97th anniversary of its elevation to the category of city, "with several high points", despite the constraints caused by the current state of calamity, starting this Sunday, December 5th, and ending on "City Day" , celebrated on the 11th.

The first highlight goes to the commemorations of the International Day of Volunteering, which takes place on December 5th, at 15 pm, at the Museu de Portimão, whose program «includes a tribute to associations and individual volunteers for the work developed by the community during Covid -00», says the municipality.

This will be followed by "a set of first-person testimonies about this experience in times of pandemic" and the delivery of the 3rd Municipal Volunteering Prize, which aims to "distinguish projects in the areas of solidarity, health, environment, social economy, education and training that promote the improvement of the quality of life of children, young people, the elderly, citizens with disabilities or other people in vulnerable situations».

Another important moment will take place on December 9th, at 16 pm, in the main hall of Paços do Concelho, when the professors who retired during the last academic year will be honored, as a fair recognition for a profession so often seen as a true mission of life.

Over the next day, 10, the Portimão Museum hosts the colloquium “Manuel Teixeira Gomes, the politician and the diplomat, the writer and the artist”, in which distinguished lecturers will focus on the life and work of the most prestigious Portimão, who came to hold the position of President of the Republic and was at the origin of the elevation, in 1924, of Vila Nova de Portimão to the status of city.

Also on the same date, at 21 pm, lovers of the so-called national song will be able to watch the show “Noite de Fado – 00 Anos de Cidade”, which will bring together a group of local fado singers at TEMPO – Teatro Municipal de Portimão.

The morning of “City Day”, December 11th, begins at 9:00 am with the traditional raising of flags in Largo 1º de Maio, with the participation of the Sociedade Filarmónica Portimonense, Fanfare of the Association of Voluntary Firefighters of Portimão, Sociedade Columbófila de Portimão, PSP, GNR, Maritime Police and the Algarve Fuzileiros Association.

The solemn session will begin soon after, at 10 am, in the main hall of the Paços do Concelho and, in addition to speeches by the Mayor, Isilda Gomes, and Isabel Guerreiro, President of the Municipal Assembly, will feature testimonies from professionals in combat to Covid-30 and musical moments by the Barlavento Ensemble.

The agenda for this day will continue at 16 pm in TEMPO, with the Sport Gala – Homage to the Portimonenses Champions of the 00/2020 season, which illustrates the strong sporting dynamics of the municipality, with several prizes being awarded. Tickets are free and must be collected at the TEMPO ticket office.

On a literary level, the winning work of the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Literary Prize will be presented, which includes the respective author's online participation (on December 7th, at 18 pm, at the Manuel Teixeira Gomes Municipal Library), the launch of the “Meridional” Mediterranean studies journal, or the presentation of the first two volumes of the complete work of Manuel Teixeira Gomes and the second edition of the biography of the former President of the Republic of Portimo (No. 9, at 18:00 pm, at Café Concerto do TEMPO).

In the artistic-cultural area, the 10th of December “will be fertile in events, including the inauguration of the sculpture “Renascimento”, by sculptor Renato Rodyner, scheduled for 16 pm, which will be displayed in the square on Avenida Tomás Cabreira opposite the Hotel Oriental”, emphasizes the municipality.

In turn, the Museum of Portimão will inaugurate, at 17 pm, the exhibition “As Cores da Viagem”, with paintings and drawings by António Carmo, as well as the exhibition related to the 00st Photographic Race of Portimão – Special Edition “Esperança”, which received photographic testimonies representative of the impact of Covid-21 on the forms and solutions found by the different communities, aiming at a desirable return to post-pandemic normality.

Still in the photographic aspect, the Municipal Market of Portimão marks its 14th anniversary, exhibiting, at 9:30 am, a set of photos by Luís Amado, entitled “Fragmentos no TEMPO”.

 

 

As is traditional, the associative movement of Portimão once again «providing an invaluable contribution to the festivities» of the “Day of the City” and, between the 5th and 12th of December, promotes «a versatile set of proposals for kids and adults in the various sports and equipment the county's cultural heritage”, emphasizes the municipality.

These proposals include mini hockey competitions, peddy paper senior, bodyboard, adapted karate, petanque and mountain biking, as well as aikido classes, cross training, kendo, pilates, zumba, aerobics, hydrogymnastics and chess, as well as a motorcycle ride, a hike, a sailing regatta and other nautical activities, as well as knitting and contracting activities, not to mention a theater workshop for children and adults , among other initiatives.

In particular, on "City Day", the program proposes the presentation of Musical Initiation and Saxophone Quartet classes of the Academy of Music of Portimão, with students from Basic and Secondary Education, which will take place at 17:00 at the Museum of Portimão .

The Pavilhão Desportivo da Boavista will mark the 2nd anniversary with a solidarity game between the Futsal teams of Portimonense and Azeméis, scheduled for 17:00, and whose ticket will be delivered in exchange for a food item destined for a charity institution in the municipality. , as well as a yoga class, open to everyone, which will start at 19pm.

The celebrations culminate on December 12th, with the Christmas Concert that the Orquestra Sinfónica do Algarve will perform at 17:00 at the Igreja da Penina.

All activities are free of charge, but subject to the capacity of each space and in compliance with the guidelines of the General Directorate of Health, namely the presentation of a valid digital vaccination/recovery certificate, or a negative test certificate.
