Catarina Martins, national coordinator of the Left Block, participated this Saturday, 11 December, in a rally to kick off the pre-electoral campaign, which took place in Lagoa, and was attended by José Gusmão, head of the list for the Algarve.

The current MEP began his speech indicating that the Algarve, in 2019, had, at national level, the lowest average monthly salary, was the second region in the country with the highest GDP per/capita and had the highest risk of poverty rate high in Portugal.

José Gusmão underlined “the importance of creating a sustainable economy in the region that lasts all year, eliminating the seasonality of tourism, whose economic sector is the majority in the region”.

Another aspect pointed out was the environment, «the full potential in the area of renewable energies that the Algarve has to be used, but it is also important, in this regard, to quickly combat water scarcity in the region».

Thus, in the Algarve, in the opinion of José Gusmão, “it is important to improve working conditions, namely labor laws, wages and pensions paid, together with the creation of affordable housing, combined with the improvement of the provision of healthcare and transport and economic diversification'.

João Vasconcelos, the candidacy's representative and head of the list for BE in the last Legislatives, listed the Bloc's objectives for the Algarve in the next legislatives, stressing the importance of electing one or more deputies again.

He even accused «the PS and the PSD/CDS right of assuming themselves in the Assembly of the Republic as authentic forces blocking the development of the Algarve».

Finally, Catarina Martins addressed the diversions «from capital to offshore, with the serious damage to the Country, something that is elaborated by the great law firms and that, after all the scandals, demonstrate the permanent flight and the hidden crimes, owing the Country to pursue and capture these immense volumes of embezzled money, which last year alone, in Portugal, it corresponded to 1300 million euros».

The BE coordinator highlighted the "need to create a new cycle for Portugal, with better health, better education, integrated mainly into the public sector, strengthening and enhancing the careers of its professionals".
