Solidarity baskets "wrap" Christmas for 350 families from São Brás de Alportel

The initiative also included the offering of gifts to children from needy families

A solidarity basket, made up of goods purchased from local businesses, is being delivered to three and a half hundred families in São Brás de Alportel, to "wrap" them over Christmas.

In 2021, a year "marked once again by the pandemic and the crisis", this support will reach a greater number of families, to "provide everyone a dignified, fraternal and happy Christmas, where bread and peace will not be lacking at the table" , according to the Chamber of São Brás de Alportel.

"In this year of increased difficulties because of the pandemic, the platform reinforced its dynamic to reach more families, taking more essential goods, helping more children and illuminating this festive season with hope and fraternity," reinforced the municipality.

The offer of the Christmas Solidarity Basket is carried out within the scope of «the social intervention work that is carried out throughout the year with households with social and economic vulnerabilities».

The initiative promoted, in partnership, by the municipality and the Parish Council of São Brás de Alportel, coordinating entities of the Local Platform for Food Aid, which has its headquarters in the Social Store of São Brás de Alportel, with the collaboration of all partners of the platform – local nucleus of Cáritas, Salvation Army, CCD – Center for Culture and Sports of Workers of the City Council and Parish Council and Santa Casa da Misericórdia of São Brás de Alportel.

In addition to the basket, gifts for the little ones will be given to families. “Parents are discreetly given presents, appropriate to the ages and preferences of their children, so that their “shoes” can have the deserved surprise on Christmas night or morning», revealed the Chamber.

This solidarity action is possible thanks to the “Anjinhos de Natal” project, which counts on the collaboration of the local nucleus of the Salvation Army and “the generosity of a group of social benefit groups in the Algarve”.

As for the traditional Solidarity Dinner of Kings, organized annually by the City Council and the Parish Council, for a decade now, with the support of many entities and companies in the county, through the donation of all food and with the participation of several volunteers, no will come true.

Solidarity did not stop with families facing difficulties and also extends to entrepreneurs.

The City Council and the Board bought the food that composes, in this edition, the Cabaz Solidário da Consoada, in some local establishments, namely the sweets sector, which was penalized throughout this period, also contributing to continue the municipal strategy to support the local economy'.
