34 Social Innovation projects, totaling an investment of over 6 million euros, were supported by the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Program, in conjunction with the Portugal Innovation Social Mission Structure (EMPIS), between 2016 and 2021.

According to the Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR), “in the field of social inclusion, the crisis generated by the pandemic has aggravated the living conditions of the most vulnerable social groups, namely the elderly, children, the unemployed, people with disabilities or disabilities, migrants, ethnic minorities, and other groups that present greater difficulties in integration and civic, economic, professional and social participation”.

To respond to this problem, the OP Algarve 2020 «has been supporting social entrepreneurship projects, both in terms of job creation and in the implementation of pilot projects with new solutions, with a view to responding to unfavorable situations of a social nature, often in a logic complementary to the traditional responses'.

Among the set of 34 supported projects, two are social innovation incubators, 13 work in the area of social inclusion of children, the elderly, people with disabilities and other disadvantaged audiences, three in the area of health, four in the area of active aging, two in the integration of young NEETs, one in the promotion of digital literacy, three in the promotion of employability, the rest acting in the areas of education, justice, among others.

All projects have the involvement of social investors, namely companies (Leroy Merlin, Alliance Healthcare, Educoach, for example), foundations (Gulbenkian, Ageas, MONAF), banking entities (Caixa Geral de Depósitos, Montepio), universities (Algarve, Minho), IPSS, Intermunicipal Community, municipalities and municipal companies or the Algarve Tourism Region that provide part of the financing of the projects.

With a view to supporting the empowerment of actors in the innovation and social entrepreneurship system in Portugal, and in this way to improve the response levels of social economy entities and contribute to their economic and financial sustainability, CCDR Algarve will integrate the future Observatory Regional Office of the National Competence Center for Social Innovation.

«The continuation of the commitment already made with European Funds managed in the region through the Algarve2020, in support of social innovation projects, boosted in the context of the social economy and which has been pointed out as a good example at the European level, will be continued within the scope of the PO Algarve2030, aiming to continue contributing to the adaptation and development of innovative solutions in the territorial or thematic context», stresses the CCDR.

Thus, within the scope of the OP Algarve2030, support will be continued for the work carried out by EMPIS in the promotion of inter-sectorial and proximity partnerships, with a view to creating a favorable environment for social entrepreneurship, generating trust on the part of investors, public and private , towards the development of social transformation processes, for better social and collective efficiency.
