A sweet potato that gives (almost) everything has its festival in Aljezur again

The event can still be visited until tomorrow, the 28th, at 22 pm

It can be used for a complete meal: it can be eaten as a snack, it accompanies meat, fish, seafood, game and vegetarian dishes, it gives more life to soups and fits like a glove on confectionery products. Even beer and liqueurs are already made with Aljezur's sweet potato, which is the star of the festival it gives its name, which will run until tomorrow, Sunday, the 28th.

O Sweet Potato Festival returned to Espaço Multiusos in Aljezur, in a format that is close to normal, but with strong Covid-19 prevention measures, such as the mandatory digital vaccination certificate or the presentation of a negative test for this disease, in addition to the use of a mask.

“The fair is going well. This year we have fewer stands, a more restrained offer and very strict rules for cleaning, sanitation and access to the premises», illustrated José Gonçalves, mayor of Aljezur, in statements to Sul Informação.

“I believe it will be a good festival. Naturally, we are not going to have the crowds of other years, but it is important that it happens, for several reasons: because it was not done last year, because it is important for the economy, but also for the self-esteem of the people of Aljezur».

«We live in troubled times, of uncertainty and even some discouragement and, obviously, these moments are also important, because they pull us up», believes José Gonçalves.

And smiles and a good mood are not lacking in the fairgrounds. They are allied to the sweet potato of the Lyra variety, the one from Aljezur, which has a Protected Geographical Indication, in different formats.

In addition to the direct sale of sweet potatoes from Aljezur, the event has local products, handicrafts and a Petisqueira Zone, where you can find meals and snacks based on the festival's star.
