October was so hot that parts of the Algarve and Baixo Alentejo were experiencing severe drought

Not even the rains of the last days of October helped much

The recent month of October was classified as "very hot" in relation to air temperature and "normal" in relation to precipitation, in mainland Portugal, has just announced the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). These temperatures and little rain in the South mean that some areas of Alentejo and Algarve are in «severe drought».

According to the IPMA, the mean value of the average air temperature, 17.73°C, was the 6th highest since 2000, with an anomaly of +1.52°C compared to the 1971-2000 normal value.

The average maximum air temperature value, 23.69°C, was higher than the normal value, +2.46°C, being the 5th highest value since 2000. The average minimum air temperature value, 11.77°C, was 0.58°C higher than the normal value.

During the past month, the «the persistence of maximum air temperature values ​​almost always above the normal value» stands out, with the periods from 6 to 15 and 18 to 21 being worthy of note.

Regarding the minimum air temperature, and until the 20th, values ​​were close to or higher than normal, from the 22nd onwards the values ​​were lower, with a sharp rise in the last days of the month (29th to 31st).

The average value of the amount of precipitation in October, 87.7 mm, was close to the 1971-2000 normal value, corresponding to 89%.

During the month, the period from 28 to 31 stands out, with the occurrence of precipitation, sometimes persistent and strong to very strong, on the 29th and 31st, in the North and Center regions, and, on the 30th, in the regions of the Center and South.

However, this rain was not enough to solve the drought problem. At the end of October, 28% of the territory was in a weather drought situation, reveals the IPMA.

Although there was a decrease in the area of ​​meteorological drought in Alto Alentejo, there was an increase in intensity in Baixo Alentejo and Algarve, with some locations in the severe drought class.
