Organ Festival begins with concerts by António Esteireiro in Portimão and Faro

Event will have concerts in Boliqueime, Faro, Portimão and Tavira

This year's edition of the Algarve Organ Festival will start this Friday, November 5th, at 21 pm, in Portimão, with a concert by António Esteireiro. The organist will also perform on the following day, 00, at Sé de Faro, in this one that is a initiative of Associação Cultural Música XXI.

The opening concert of the Festival will take place this Friday, November 5th, at the Igreja Matriz in Portimão, with the organist António Esteireiro and the participation of the Coral Adágio, directed by António Alves.

The highlight goes to the interpretation of the choral works “A Hymn of St. Columba”, by Benjamin Britten (1913-1976), and “Stabat mater painful”, by Stabat mater by João Rodrigues Esteves (ca. 1701-1752).

The first work “commemorates the life of a missionary and describes the day of judgment, first in anxiety and finally in a perspective of rest”, while the second “is a prayer and meditates on the suffering of Mary, the mother of Jesus, during the crucifixion,” explains the cultural association.

On the following day, November 6, António Esteireiro changes the repertoire and performs solo on the organ of the Sé de Faro.

«Traveling the constructive path and the influences that mark this unique 306-year-old instrument», the concert program will focus on German, Italian and Dutch composers from the XNUMXth to XNUMXth centuries, in which you will hear «openings, passacaglias, choirs, concerts, arias and sonatas by Handel, Storace, Buxtehude, Bach, Paganelli, Scarlatti and Sweelinck».

The concerts are free to enter, and the opening one will also be broadcast online by the partner Mais Algarve through Facebook of the Associação Cultural Música XXI.

Born in Lisbon, António Esteireiro studied Organ, Sacred Music and Musicology, in Lisbon, Regensburg, Munich and Bremen.

In addition to «regular guest of the main concert cycles and national organ festivals», he also coordinated several cycles, namely, Integral Messiaen 2008 at the Patriarcal Cathedral of Lisbon, the Organ Cycles of the Basilica dos Mártires and the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Lisbon, and also the Organ Cycle of the Church of Nossa Senhora do Cabo (Linda-a-Velha).
