Cutting trees at Largo da Palmeira generates new controversy between Glocal and Câmara de Faro

Works cost 476 thousand euros

The place is known as Largo da Palmeira, but it is not this tree that is at the center of the controversy in the redevelopment works taking place at Praça Ferreira de Almeida, in Faro. A cut of at least eight trees, made last week, is being contested by the Glocal movement, but the City Council guarantees that there will be the replanting of five and the planting of another 10.

An “unacceptable attitude that happens in a city that has one of the lowest rates of green space per inhabitant”. This is how Glocal Faro classifies the cutting of trees that already motivated a vigil of citizens last Thursday night, 11th of November.

Contacted by Sul Informação, the Chamber of Faro guarantees that the works foresee “the replanting of five trees” in Largo da Palmeira. As for the other three, they will be «relocated to the Escola Basica 2,3 Dr. José Neves Júnior».

The local authority, in response to our newspaper, also said that «10 new trees will be planted in Praça Ferreira de Almeida».

For Glocal, who asked the Chamber to consult the project of the works, this was a "radical pruning", made in "healthy and adult trees".

This movement of citizens also complains “of the repeated practice of the municipal executive of Faro of treating trees as urban furniture, when they are patrimony of all of us, as well as guaranteeing life on earth”.

"It is revolting and unacceptable", they add, since this is not the first time that a work by the Chamber deserves the repudiation of Glocal, as happened in the case of orange trees in Sé.

The Chamber of Faro, on the other hand, says that the renovation works of Largo da Palmeira and the adjacent streets, with a budget of around 476 thousand euros, will «make this whole area more appealing and functional, favoring pedestrians and their accessibility conditions. ».

The company responsible for the intervention is RolearOn, which has a deadline of 210 days to carry it out.
