Celebrating 100 years since its discovery with several initiatives all over the world, also in the Algarve region «A Insulina Sai à Rua», by the University Hospital Center of the Algarve (CHUA). Over the next two months, 40 activities will take place in various municipalities and associations.

The launch of this initiative took place on the morning of this Friday, 12 November, in the auditorium of the Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) of the Algarve, in Faro.

The idea came from Ana Maria Lopes, director of the Medicine 1 service at CHUA, in November 2020.

The goal is clear: to celebrate 100 years of the discovery of insulin, "a hormone that regulates blood sugar levels and that has already made life possible for many people," explained the doctor.

After the suggestion, CHUA, "which cares about the people it follows and wants to be closer to the population," decided "to take this project on insulin forward," said Ana Maria Lopes.

This project, aimed at the Algarve community and the general public, not just for diabetics, encompasses street actions, technical interventions in the community, webinars themes, videos, testimonies and audiovisual supports, artistic, scientific and recreational initiatives or active participation in social media, digital social networks and other advertising platforms and spaces.

An important partner in this initiative, the University of Algarve (UAlg) joins the commemorations, not wanting to «just link to the disease or to the treatment», but making known what insulin is «through the involvement of students, professors and researchers in the initiatives», highlighted Ana de Freitas, vice-rector of UAlg.

"24 activities will run until January 2022", including "the creation of murals, at the university and in municipalities, reports and documentaries on insulin or the creation of interactive posters alluding to this theme".

Of the planned initiatives, the vice-rector also highlighted the "Insulin Time Capsule", which "will have descriptions of the last 100 years, as well as testimonies from health professionals and patients", and which will be deposited at the University of Lisbon Library Algarve, being «only open in 10 years».

Another of the highlights goes to a special section of the Revista Mundo Contemporâneo, written by students of Communication Sciences, which will have «several articles on insulin, when viewed from different areas».

For José Apolinário, president of the CCDR of the Algarve, «the region needs network projects like this one», related to insulin.

During his speech, the official said that "in the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework, approximately 5% of the total funds for the region have been mobilized so far for the Health area", but that in the next table, 2021-2027, "it is necessary to mobilize the population for what we will have from European funds, which will be around 1.200 billion euros, for all areas, in the next 10 years".

«It will be a huge responsibility to mobilize these means for concrete things that can be structuring for the region, so the point is not the money, but what we do with it», concludes the president of CCDR Algarve.

Paulo Neves, executive member of the Board of Directors of CHUA, thanked CTT – Correios de Portugal for joining the project with several graphic proposals for postcards on the centenary of the discovery of insulin.

During the project's launch session, Paulo Neves also highlighted the fact that, on that day, it was being installed at the Hospital de Faro, a 2nd generation biplane angiograph, which will make it possible to treat, in the Algarve, patients who have had a cerebrovascular accident (CVA), without the need for transport to Lisbon.

As for the “A Insulina Sai à Rua” initiative, the kick off has been kicked off, with all the activities, information and programming available on the website, with space also for scientific texts and other resources.
