A stall full of proposals to help bring Faro the European Capital of Culture

In online or face-to-face format, this project had more than 800 participations not only from individuals but also from entities and organizations

A Banca da Cultura, an initiative of the candidacy of Faro the European Capital of Culture, collected, throughout the month of September, creative proposals from all over the Algarve. The results, guarantees the organization, «exceeded expectations». 

During the month of September there was an open call to the cultural and creative sector of the Algarve region for the presentation of proposals and contributions to the cultural and artistic program of the application.

«A total of 73 proposals were received, from agents from all over the region and that address the different artistic disciplines, with a significant number of multidisciplinary projects», says the application of Faro the European Capital of Culture.

Many of the projects show “a willingness to work with and for the community, as well as to disseminate the Algarve's cultural heritage (both material and immaterial) and take culture to unusual places”.

Bruno Inácio, project team coordinator for the application of Faro the European Capital of Culture 2027, highlights the quality of the proposals presented, as well as the mobilizing capacity of the entities that adhered to this initiative.

“We are very pleased with the participation of the cultural and creative sector in the call we made to help us generate ideas for the application process for Faro the European Capital of Culture. We received very interesting proposals that show the will and capacity of a sector that is permanently seeking to reinvent itself, broadening its vision and capacity for action. We received proposals from all over the Algarve, which is also very important as the application takes on this aspect strongly. We will now analyze the proposals and look for them to be relevant within the process of artistic construction», he says.

This phase of collecting ideas for the artistic content of the Application for Faro the European Capital of Culture 2027 also had an appeal to the entire population through the Banca da Cultura project.

For three months, digital sessions were held, visits to regional associations and organizations. There was also a physical space, dedicated to the application, in the Municipal Market of Faro. Among the themes most mentioned by the population in general, urban space and the community stand out, as well as nature, health and well-being, representing respectively 29%, 18%, 11% and 8,2% of the total of proposals submitted.

Sofia Martins, responsible for the area of ​​public participation in the application, explains the importance of community involvement.

«Culture Banking emerges as a reinforcement of the accessibility and proximity characteristics that are intended with this project. This initiative allows us to make the project known, gather ideas for the artistic and cultural program of the application, but above all, hear about the challenges, ideas and proposals of different groups in our community», he concludes.
