Tennis: Sisters Francisca and Matilde go ahead at Loulé Open Ladies

Tournament runs until October 10th

Sisters Francisca Jorge and Matilde Jorge won, this Tuesday, October 5th, the first Portuguese victory in the inaugural edition of the Loulé Open Ladies by stamping the qualification for the quarter-finals of doubles.

Playing side by side for the fourth time on the international circuit, the tennis players from Guimarães defeated the Spanish Alba Carrillo Marin and the Indian Vasanti Shinde by 6-4 and 6-2 in the last meeting of the day.

In the quarter-finals, Francisca Jorge and Matilde Jorge can face a compatriot, if Inês Murta and Indian Riya Bhatia overtake Ganna Poznikhirenko and Prarthana Thombare.

In the singles, Russian Viktoria Kuzmova (number 156 in the WTA ranking and top 50 in 2019) confirmed her status as the first seed by defeating Spanish Eva Guerrero Alvarez (6th) by 3-6 and 2-289. with a title in Portugal (Porto Open 2019).

In the remaining singles matches of the day, Jessika Ponchet (213th) beat Diana Marcinkevica (354th) by 7-5 and 6-3, Marina Bassols Ribera (294th) beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro (360th) by 6-1, 4- 6 and 6-4 and Anna Kubareva (318th) overcame Riya Bhatia (386th) with the ends of 6-3 and 6-4.

This Wednesday will be the opening day for the only Portuguese present in the singles main frame: at 10:00 am, Inês Murta (758th) will face qualifier Shiho Akita (408th). Then, in the second meeting at 13:30 pm, national number one Francisca Jorge (378th) will be challenged by Italian Jessica Pieri (279th).
