Convention of Faro marked with an international conference at Teatro Lethes

A Faro Convention International Conference - Warm Up Meeting will take place this Wednesday, 27th October, at 9:30 am, at Teatro Lethes, in a session organized under the Candidature for European Capital of Culture, which aims to commemorate the 16 years of the Convention of Faro on the Value of Cultural Heritage for Society.

The session will feature the signing of memorandums of understanding between the municipality of Faro, the University of the Algarve, the UNESCO - Chair on Heritage and Heritage and the Reshaping of Urban Conservation for Sustainability and TU Delft Chair n Heritage and Values (Netherlands), which aim to “enhance collaboration and further development of this theme in the future and the development of an action program so that in 2022 the first edition of the Faro Convention International Conference.

In the morning, the event will feature «moments dedicated to presentations by various doctoral students (in English) on topics such as communities, sustainability, participation and urbanism», says the municipality of Faro.

In the afternoon, a workshop and a moment of debate (in English) around the use of digital technologies in the context of Cultural Heritage, with the project “Mi.Momo.Faro” as a motto.

The entire event will take place in a hybrid format, with the morning session being broadcast live on the Youtube of the municipality of Faro.

The municipality of Faro recalls that “the Convention of Faro, signed in the city on October 27, 2005, underlines the importance of cultural heritage as an integral part of human rights and democracy, promoting a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of this concept and its relationship with society».

The Convention of Faro "marks a turning point in heritage thinking, by understanding cultural heritage as a matter that belongs to everyone and for everyone, which should be everyone's responsibility and where everyone has the right to participate, which is inherent to the right to defined cultural participation in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights», explains the Faro local authority.

With the creation of an International Conference dedicated to the Convention of Faro, the municipality of Faro and the Application of Faro the European Capital of Culture 2027 thus intends to «promote this appreciation of the individual and collective role of society in the context of heritage, which without it loses its true meaning», he concludes.
