Communist Álvaro Leal will not accept positions in the Vila Real de Santo António Council

CDU will have "a constructive attitude", but will act "within a framework of total independence and autonomy"

Álvaro Leal (CDU) will not accept functions as councilor for the Vila Real de Santo António City Council, the PCP has just announced. The hope of President Álvaro Araújo (PS) fell to the ground and the socialists will have to lead the autarchy without an absolute majority.

In a statement, the PCP guarantees that the CDU will have “a constructive attitude”, but will act “within a framework of total independence and autonomy”.

This political force explains that it will support "everything positive is proposed, fighting anything negative that may arise and taking the initiative to present proposals and solutions for the council".

It is certain that this decision “does not involve the assumption of responsibilities by the CDU councilor in the municipal executive, a decision that was taken and transmitted to the PS on 15th October”.

Hours before this public position of the communists, the Sul Informação spoke with Álvaro Araújo (PS) that he was confident of reaching an agreement with the CDU.

The PS won the Local Elections, but did not win an absolute majority. Socialists have three councilors, the same as the PSD.

The CDU, which has twice led the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, also elected a councilor and could be the key to unlocking the governance of the municipality.

Regarding the vote for the Municipal Assembly, in which the PS, despite not having a majority, managed to elect its list to the table, the CDU explains that it respected «the electoral results, allowing the most voted political force – the PS – in the Municipal Assembly and in the parish councils, form, respectively, the tables and executives of these bodies».

O Sul Informação already tried to contact Álvaro Araújo, but without success.
