The works at Praia do Peneco, in Albufeira, have already started, in a contract worth 1 million euros that wants «conditions so that Albufeires and tourists enjoy even more» of this space.

The works include requalification of the Praia do Peneco staircase, with the correction of existing slopes and levels, as well as the placement of public lighting, an area with shower and foot washing, and stabilization of the cliff, using nailing.

With this intervention, the Municipality of Albufeira says that it «intends to improve the accessibility of the beach access staircase, stabilize the cliffs, rehabilitate the existing staircase, improve the existing public lighting, implement a walkway along the beach, between the elevator and the staircase. and provide the space with support equipment, such as washing feet and showers».

The transplantation of the two existing palm trees is also planned and the placement of two more shaded areas similar to the existing ones: one next to the location of the palm trees and another in the middle of the staircase.

These works will imply changes in pedestrian and road accessibility, so the access stairway will be closed to the public, with the possibility for citizens to go through the elevator, or elevator stairs, or through the tunnel.

Vehicles will also have to enter the works on the sand and along Rua Latino Coelho, so residents should pay attention to parking on the days when there are concreting actions or arrival of materials, making it impossible to park on those days, which will be target of notices in advance.

These works will force vehicles to enter the sand either in the Inatel area, traveling along the sand to the construction site, that is, to Praia do Peneco.

For José Carlos Rolo, mayor of Albufeira, «these are fundamental works for us to enhance this emblematic area of Albufeira, which has long lacked profound intervention».

“With this requalification, the intention is to create conditions for residents and tourists to enjoy this public space even more, promoting sustainable and safe mobility and making this emblematic beach even more attractive and inclusive”, he explains.

The final completion of the works is expected in February 2022.
