Algarvian sailor Beatriz Gago to compete in the Women Champions League international final

The good performance of the Algarve sailor Beatriz Gago in the regatta Women On Water Portugal earned him one wild card, assigned by the organization, which allows you to be present at the end of the Women Champions League.

The Algarve Olympic hope was even eliminated in the semi-finals, finishing in 5th place in the race. Women On Water Portugal, which is the largest women's regatta to take place in Portugal, and which was held over the weekend, on the Douro river.

This competition selected the Portuguese teams that are going to dispute the international final, which takes place in Cascais, between 15 and 17 October. It should be noted that in the world of sailing this is the model of competition in the format of Champions League European.

The championship was played on the Douro River, along the banks of Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto. There were 10 crews in the water, in a total of 40 sailors, who over two days carried out 12 races.

The top 4 teams competed in the final on Sunday afternoon, with the winner to be found at the end of 2 races. There were two days of intense regattas, very competitive and where the national fleet demonstrated its great level.

The main national sailors were present, including the Olympian Carolina João, the former Olympians Sara Carmo (present in the London and Rio de Janeiro OG), Rita Gonçalves (London OJ), as well as the Olympic hope, Beatriz Gago .

The victory was for the crew of Algés and Dafundo, with Carolina João, Rita Gonçalves, Joana Azevedo and Frederica Franchi. It was a decided victory in the 2nd and final race. The remaining 3 teams qualified for the final come from Clube Naval de Cascais.

In second and third place were the experienced crew led by Inês Nolasco and Teresa Borges Coutinho, respectively. Olympic athlete Sara Carmo closed the classification of the teams that qualified for the final.

Among the crews in the competition, the Algarve Beatriz Gago was eliminated in the semi-finals, finishing in 5th place, but her good performance earned her a wild card.

This regatta is organized by the BBDouro Sailing Academy in partnership with Lusíadas Saúde, which will ensure the official medical service of Lusíadas Saúde Porto Sailing 2021 and also guaranteed a screening post to Covid-19 for athletes and technical teams. In this way, the race followed all the standards and guidelines of the DGS for sporting events and had the control of COVID-19 procedures.
