Bensafrim fire has already been subdued but consolidation work continues

Air assets were crucial

The fire that, since mid-morning this saturday, consumed an area of woods, cork oaks and pine forest, near Bensafrim (Lagos). The fire was considered "under resolution" at 19:12 pm, but 185 workers remain on the site, supported by 65 vehicles, including crawler machines, which are now carrying out consolidation work.

At the end of this afternoon, there was an increase in the performance of air resources, with a total of 10 vehicles in action, including Canadair planes and other amphibians, as well as heavy and light helicopters.

Since mid-afternoon, the fire had been reduced to one front, the source of the EN120 road, which connects Lagos to Aljezur, and which has remained cut off.

However, the suspect of having given rise, "by accident", to the fire that broke out at 11:20 am, has already been identified by the GNR.

The Communications and Public Relations Officer of the Territorial Command of Faro GNR told our newspaper that the man was "cleaning the land" when he lit the flames, but that he "did not intentionally do it", "nor was acting illegally", since "the risk of fire was not prohibitive of this activity». The municipality of Lagos is today at “very high” risk, the second on a scale of five.

The fire, which developed on the southern slope of the Serra do Espinhaço de Cão, a short distance from Bensafrim, did not reach homes, having only destroyed a warehouse next to a rural house not currently inhabited.
