Algarve accounts for almost 30% of tourist overnight stays in Portugal in the summer of 2021

The expectation of hotels, restaurants and other sectors is that the number will continue to grow in the coming months.

After the crisis faced in 2020, the summer returned to record good numbers in tourism in Portugal. The Algarve has maintained its strong tradition of being the most visited destination in the country, both by national and foreign tourists. Some data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE) show that the region was responsible for 28,6% of tourist overnight stays in the country: an index that surpasses the figures registered in 2019 and with a growth projection for the future.

This report is part of a comprehensive study led by INE to measure the tourism situation in Portugal.

In the first seven months of this year, the country received a little more than 5 million tourists, 70% of them of Portuguese origin, which shows that domestic tourism has gained strength this year and was the main responsible for the sector's recovery. However, compared to 2019, the drop was almost 3% in the number of visitors.

The good news is the strong recovery of the Algarve and most of the region's districts. With almost 30% of tourists to choose Faro, Portimão and Lagos to sleep, the impact on the economy was positive. the unemployment rate had a strong decline until the month of August. The number registered a drop of 19,9% compared to the same month in 2020, according to data shown by the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP).

In addition to the drop in the unemployment rate, the Algarve also had a good response in tourist accommodation profits. The region was at the top of revenues, with 79,6 million, which represents an increase of 357% compared to 2020. The Azores, the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and Madeira also achieved a good recovery, but still fell short of numbers they had in the same period in 2019.

Faro stays in the spotlight

The Algarve continues to be the main reference for tourism in the country, whether for its accommodation in the region or its location. The website Discover Cars shows that the airport of Faro has a good rating within the tourist destinations in Europe, due to the fact that it is well located.

In addition, the location is also an excellent option for car rental to travel around the Algarve or cities such as Lisbon and Porto.

The district has several interesting places to visit, such as the Rota Vicentina, the Serra de Monchique, the village of Carvoeiro and the Church of São Lourenço de Almancil, such as shows the list provided by Go to Portugal. You can reach all these points by car or motorbike, which makes the trip an even more beautiful experience.
