Albufeira thanks the citizen who saved a young woman who was on vacation

Dina Delgado was received at Paços do Concelho by the vice president of the municipality, Ana Pífaro

Dina Delgado, the citizen who on August 14th saved the life of a 21 year old who was on holiday in Albufeira, was received this Friday, September 3rd, at Paços do Concelho, by the vice-president of municipality, Ana Pífaro, and by two technicians from the municipality's Occupational Health and Safety service.

The citizen residing in Albufeira told “in the first person how it all happened, the courage and cold-bloodedness with which she faced the problem, the help of some people who were nearby and the importance of having an AED (Automatic External Defibrillator) equipment in the vicinity , whose quick access was essential for the success of the operation», begins by saying the municipality of Albufeirense.

Dina Delgado was at the swimming pool of a tourist condominium, in Santa Eulália, when she realized that a young man was having an epileptic fit. Quickly, with the help of a family member, he took the young man out of the water and started the Basic Life Support (SBV) maneuvers.

Daniel, a 21-year-old from Famões, "went into cardiorespiratory arrest in less than a minute, was unconscious, was not breathing and had no pulse", recalls Dina Delgado who, despite the adrenaline caused by the situation, remembered that the a few meters from the site, in front of the Santa Eulália Tourist Office, there was a defibrillator. While carrying out the SBV, he asked a man who was there to pick him up quickly.

“By coincidence, in a house next door, there were five doctors who, upon realizing the situation, helped Daniela in the SBV maneuvers. Already with the presence of VMER on site and with the electrodes placed, he was instructed to apply the shocks that allowed the young man to regain circulation», explains the municipality of Albufeira.

The young man was transported to the Hospital of Faro, «still unconscious and ventilated, he recovered and is currently well», according to the information of the nurse from the Health and Safety at Work service who, that day, was on duty in the emergency and resuscitation medical vehicle.

Dina Delgado refers to this moment as a milestone and a learning moment, feeling “proud for having contributed to saving this young man's life, but given the situation I limited myself to acting and following the procedures I learned in my operational training. of DAE, in whose recycling, which I did last March, there was a wide debate on how to act in front of a victim who is in water».

Automatic defibrillator in Albufeira

The citizen took the opportunity to «congratulate the municipality of Albufeira for the implementation of this type of equipment on public roads, essential to save lives in case of cardiorespiratory arrest, and confessed to being increasingly motivated to improve their skills and continue to help the next whenever necessary», explains the municipality.

This was the first time that an AED installed on the public road was successfully used by a member of the community, which saved the life of this young tourist, but this «was not the first time that Dina Delgado performed SBV maneuvers and used a defibrillator».

“Awareness campaigns and training accessible to any citizen are very important to develop people's confidence in the use of defibrillators”, stresses Dina Delgado.

During September, the municipality hopes to install a further 17 wall booths in the county's schools and in some municipal buildings.
