The entire Algarve is at least in moderate drought

The month of August had a "hot and dry" weather in mainland Portugal, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA).

According to the IPMA, the month of August this year "was the 3rd warmest at a global level (equal to 2017), while in Europe it was close to the normal 1991-2020".

In mainland Portugal, the average value of the average air temperature, 22.61 °C, was +0.46 °C higher than the 1971-2000 normal value.

The average maximum air temperature value, 29.99 °C, was also higher than the normal value with an anomaly of +1.19 °C and the average minimum air temperature value, 15.23 °C, was lower than the normal value with a anomaly of -0.27 °C'.

In August, the IPMA highlights the period between the 10th and the 17th, «with values ​​always above the normal value, in particular the maximum temperature on the 13th to the 15th».

 

 

During this period there was a heat wave lasting between six to nine days in the interior North and Center regions, Vale do Tejo and in some parts of Alentejo.

"The average amount of rainfall in August, 3.8 mm, was lower than the 1971-2000 normal value, corresponding to 28 % and being the 5th lowest value since 2000 (lowest in 2010, 1.2 mm)," says the IPMA .

At the end of August, 78% of the territory was in a weather drought situation.

In the Algarve, the entire region is at least in moderate drought. Sotavento is even in a situation of severe drought.

At national level «there was an increase in the area of ​​meteorological drought, extending to the interior North and Center regions, as well as an increase in intensity with the moderate drought class covering some locations in the districts of Setúbal, Lisbon and Bragança. ».

 

 

In Europe, although August was close to the average value, there were significant temperature variations across the continent: southern and eastern Europe had warmer than average conditions, while northern Europe had cooler than average conditions. the average.

During the heat wave in southern Europe, a temperature of 48.8 °C was recorded on August 11 in Sicily, Italy. This temperature value will still be validated by the WMO but could be the highest ever recorded on the European continent.

Regarding rainfall in Europe, August saw wetter than average conditions in central Europe, the Baltic region and the Russian and Turkish Black Sea regions. On the other hand most of southern Europe had drier than average conditions.
