Members of the João de Deus National Award jury visited Silves

Award winner will be known on January 8th

José António Gomes, Violante Magalhães and Catherine Dumas, members of the João de Deus National Award jury, were in Silves, on the 14th and 15th of August, to establish the first contact with the 82 literary works competing for the award, which will be the object of appreciation. In the next months. The winning entry will be revealed on January 8, 2022.

The Chamber of Silves says that «alongside the visit to João de Deus' homeland, the judges' schedule was filled with a visit to the parishes of São Bartolomeu de Messines and Silves, namely the João de Deus Museum House, the Museum do Traje e das Tradições, the Municipal Museum of Archeology, and the monuments: Igreja Matriz de São Bartolomeu de Messines, Cruz de Portugal and Castelo de Silves, places where they had the opportunity to enjoy the surrounding landscape of the city that was once capital of the Moorish Algarve» .

The members of the jury also toured the streets decorated with the decorations usually used in editions of the Medieval Fair and watched the show, the nights of Al–Andalus at Castelo de Silves, included in the Silves Medieval initiative.

By instituting the João de Deus National Award, the Municipality of Silves «intends to honor the memory of this distinguished writer born in São Bartolomeu de Messines, whose work represents a heritage of the highest importance for national and regional culture, and is a source of pride for all. the Silvenses, as well as distinguishing and disseminating the literary creation of authors with a work published in Portuguese».
