Health professionals from hospitals in the Algarve will be invited to voluntarily postpone the holidays they have scheduled for the coming weeks, at a time when the high number of tourists is leading to an increase in demand for hospital services in the region.

Paulo Neves, member of the Board of Directors of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve, explained to Antena 1 that this proposal will only be made to workers "who had already taken vacations, the longest vacation period, before August".

These professionals will be invited by the service and nursing directors so that there is a “new agreement to extend the remaining vacation time, later on”.

The proposal to suspend vacations is not related to the increase in hospitalizations by Covid-19, although it aims to ensure CHUA's responsiveness at a time when the population in the Algarve more than doubles.

Meanwhile, the Independent Doctors Union (SIM) went public with denouncing that it "has come to know" that "unexpectedly and without any reason, the doctors of the Hospital and University Center of the Algarve are threatened with having their vacation suspended".

«Not questioning the legality of the procedure, YES regrets that this lack of planning means that doctors, who last year had their vacation suspended, once again have this problem. Damaging the family and their rest essential for correct decisions», says the union.

On public radio, Paulo Neves answered a question regarding nurses and operational assistants, but contacted by Sul Informação, a source from CHUA assured that this proposal, which requires the worker's agreement, also covers medical personnel.
