ALGAR justifies delays in the collection of recyclables due to lack of personnel and the pandemic

The company, contacted by Sul Informação, responded to the criticism made by the Chamber of Lagoa

ALGAR admits that there have been "constraints" in the collection of recyclable waste in ecopoints in Lagoa, as well as in other places in the Algarve, justifying that, on the one hand, the lack of labor, and, on the other, the faults motivated by Covid-119.

Contacted by Sul Informação, following a complaint from the Chamber of Lagoa, ALGAR admitted that, despite «all the operational planning, for the high season period», there are constraints, motivated by the «considerable increase of the population during the summer in the region, which generates the exponential growth of waste production».

These difficulties are due to the «insufficiency of employees, especially drivers, compared to the number that would be desired to guarantee the necessary teams for the production of recyclable packaging in the high season request».

"This situation is mainly due to the diversity and dynamism of the labor market in the Algarve region, which makes it difficult to retain this type of specialized function and which ends up being enticed in the tourism, hotel, catering and construction sectors", says the company multi-municipal waste management in the Algarve.

Another issue that is affecting the operation is the "sporadic shutdown of teams", due to the "need to carry out prophylactic isolations in the context of pandemic prevention".

To try to resolve the situation, the company says it is investing not only in «hiring temporary labor to reinforce the Selective Collection Activity, from May to October», but also hiring «collection teams selective for the staff” and “external service providers to reinforce the activity of collecting recycling bins and materials deposited in the surroundings of the equipment, between June and September”.

At the same time, the «reinforcement of containerization in identified locations with greater potential for the production of recyclable packaging» is being carried out, something that, says ALGAR, is already being done, through the placement of recycling bins in several new locations.

Also from Lagoa there has been “a strong investment that has been made in the installation of new ecological islands by the Municipality”.

ALGAR makes its own the appeal that had already been made by the Lagoon City Council «so that whenever they identify a full ecopoint or ecological island, they can transport their waste to the next collection point that is available, thus avoiding unwanted accumulations. ».

«The citizens will also be able to contact ALGAR immediately, informing that in a certain location the ecopoint is full, thus helping that entity organize the circuits with a view to their rapid collection. This contact can be made to the numbers 289 894 480 / 800 203 251 (Linha Verde), or to the email [email protected]», said the Chamber, in the note it sent to the newsrooms, where he "vehemently" disapproved of delays in collecting recyclable waste, under the responsibility of the ALGAR company, which have been felt in this municipality this summer.

This is, moreover, a situation that has been denounced to the Sul Informação by citizens from different parts of the Algarve.
