“Marine Waste Action!” back to Algarve markets to raise awareness

This is a partnership between the Ciência Viva Centers and the Municipal Councils

Project at Tavira Municipal Market

The “Marine Waste Action!” project, similar to what happened last summer, returns to traditional markets to raise awareness among its users about the problems of marine waste. Five markets in the Algarve will host stalls for this ocean literacy project, between the end of August and September, in a partnership between the Ciência Viva Centers and the Municipal Councils of the municipalities where these actions will take place.

Visitors will have the opportunity, in the various parts of the project, to test their knowledge of marine litter and the impact it has on marine life, the local economy and society in general.

The Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira, promoter of the project, will promote the “Ação Lixo Marinho!” stand. at Tavira Municipal Market, which can be visited every Friday and Saturday until September 11th, between 10:00 am and 12:30 pm.

In the Barlavento Algarve, the actions will take place at the Avenida Municipal Market, in Lagos, promoted by the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos, and the stand can be visited on the 31st of August and 14th of September.

Also in September, actions will also be organized in the Municipal Markets of Faro, Quarteira and Albufeira by the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, in collaboration with UAlg V+, the Volunteer Group of the University of Algarve.

The actions to raise awareness of the problem of marine litter carried out in municipal markets "are part of a set of activities and strategies designed to involve not only the general public, but also more specific groups such as the school community", explains Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira, promoter of the project, in a note sent to the newsrooms.

The project aims to "encourage reflection on marine pollution and instill the adoption of behaviors at the individual and collective level that favor the preservation and responsible and sustainable exploitation of marine resources", he adds.

ALIMAR – Marine Waste Action! is a nationwide project, promoted by the Centro Ciência Viva de Tavira and 11 partner entities linked to the dissemination of science (Centres Ciência Viva do Algarve, Lagos, Lousal, Vila do Conde and Expolab – Centro Ciência Viva), research ( ARDITI – Regional Agency for the Development of Research, Technology and Innovation, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, and the University of Algarve) and environmental management (Portuguese Environment Agency and Cascais Ambiente) and environmental protection (Marmeu – Association Defense of the Environment).

This project is co-financed by the Fundo Azul, a financial incentive mechanism of the Ministry of the Sea, aimed at «enhancing the development of the economy of the sea, supporting scientific and technological research, encouraging the protection and monitoring of the marine environment and increasing maritime safety» , concludes the note.
