Espaço Saúde 360º Algarve alerts seniors to be careful with the heat

Session is open to the general public upon mandatory registration

O 360º Algarve Health Area promotes, this Tuesday, 13th of July, from 15:00 to 16:30, the information session “Health in Day: Summer in Safety – Heat and Senior Citizens”, in the auditorium of the Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA), in Faro.

The session aims to alert the elderly population, especially the chronically ill, to take care during the summer, due to excessive heat.

«Through practical advice, which contributes to the well-being and better quality of life of the elderly population, we want this session to sensitize the elderly to the basic care to have with excess heat, in order to have a safe summer », says Ricardo Valente Santos, psychologist and project manager 360º Algarve Health Area.

This initiative is open to the general public, upon mandatory registration here, being carried out in partnership with the Regional Health Administration (ARS) of the Algarve and the Group of Health Centers (ACES) Central do Algarve.

«Dehydration is one of the most common situations in the elderly during the summer, which makes it necessary to reinforce the importance of the theme with this segment of the population, in order to encourage extra care in terms of health. In addition, high temperatures and dry weather can contribute to the aggravation of certain chronic diseases such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure or hypertension», says Dr. Ana Karina Abreu.

Some of the advice that will be covered in the information session includes "fighting dehydration, avoiding sugary and alcoholic drinks, eating light meals, choosing, whenever possible, foods rich in water, such as fruit and vegetables, and avoiding sun exposure in the hottest hours», says Espaço Saúde.

The session will feature the participation of Ana Karina Abreu, general and family health doctor, from ACES Central do Algarve, and Conceição Jardim, nutritionist at União de Freguesias de Faro (Sé and São Pedro) and professor at the University of Algarve (UAlg).

“Saúde em Dia: Summer in Safety – Heat and Third” is part of a series of informative sessions that aim to clarify the Algarve population on health-related issues, through simple and objective communication, in an attempt to demystify some misconceptions.

For this, the sessions «have the important support of health professionals and patient associations associated with the Saúde em Dialogue Platform, who join in this mission of promoting health literacy among the elderly community in the Algarve», concludes the Space Health 360º Algarve.
