Chamber pays back part of the salary of lifeguards on Lagos beaches

Measure will cost around 137 euros

For the second consecutive year, the City Council of Lagos will reimburse the salaries of lifeguards who work on the municipality's beaches, with the aim of contributing to safety in the bathing areas of Lacobrigens.

The measure, which has already been approved at the Council Meeting, will cover the beaches of Luz, Porto de Mós, Camilo, D. Ana and Meia Praia and is justified by the municipality with the difficulties faced by concessionaires of bathing support.

«The reduction in the number of awnings and the limitation of available equipment, together with the increase in the costs of cleaning spaces, imposed by the measures to combat the pandemic, resulted in a drop in revenue for concessionaires and the consequent greater difficulty in ensure the responsibility with the lifeguards to which they are obliged», framed the Chamber.

«In this context, and in view of the need to maintain the surveillance and security system in bathing areas, the municipality of Lagos decided, within the scope of the “Lagos Apoia – Support Program for Families and Local Economy”, to contribute 50% and 75% % the gross monthly salary and expenses associated with lifeguards, depending on whether they are concessionaires who, in addition to bathing support, have beach support or just bathing support», he added.

The estimated cost of the measure is 137 thousand euros, a value that already includes the increase in the number of lifeguards determined in the Integrated Rescue Plan of Meia Praia, "which increased from 14 troops in 2020 to 20 troops in 2021", as well as the need to use other resources, such as quad bikes and watercraft.

Praia da Batata, “because it is currently without a concession granted, it will have the surveillance and safety device provided by the municipality, through the direct hiring of lifeguards”.
