Algarve libraries will provide free access to 7 newspapers and magazines online

AMAL purchased the Press Reader service

Readers of the Algarve Municipal Libraries Network (BIBAL) will have free access to more than 7000 online publications, following the acquisition, by AMAL – Algarve Intermunicipal Community, of the Press Reader service.

The proposal to acquire this service, which will cost around 20 thousand euros a year and will allow the reading of national and foreign publications, was unanimously approved today at the Meeting of the Intermunicipal Council, which brings together the 16 mayors of the Algarve.

"All the presidents recognized the importance of the measure for the communities in the region and will support this expense, thus ensuring the availability of the service in the network of municipal libraries belonging to BIBAL (it should be noted that the only municipality that does not have a library is of Aljezur)', according to AMAL.

In this way, the Algarve's mayors intend to «encourage reading and believe that this initiative universalizes and democratizes access to information and knowledge. Furthermore, being an online service, they do it in a sustainable, global and easy way, within the scope of the mission of public libraries».

PressReader is a digital platform, distributed in Portugal by WECUL and provides direct and full access to periodicals from over 150 countries and in more than 60 languages, through an interface with several features, including searches by title, country, language or category.

Access to the platform will be through a app, with the library user credentials.

It is expected that, by the end of this year, the Municipal Libraries of the Algarve will be able to make the tool available to all their readers.
