Students from EB 2,3 João da Rosa animate gutters to warn about the care to be taken with plastics

They drew, painted and left their message of environmental awareness: those gutters must not pass the plastics that will pollute the Ria Formosa and, consequently, the sea

The gutters of Escola EB 2,3 João da Rosa became one of the attractions of this educational establishment in Olhano after the school community, in particular the students from the 7th C, decided to raise awareness of the need to protect the Ria Formosa and the oceans of pollution.

Addressing the issues of pollution of aquatic ecosystems, especially those associated with the use of plastics, Escola EB 2,3 João da Rosa developed the action Sarjetas Animadas, one of the various educational activities carried out throughout the school year that has just ended, which aimed at sensitizing young people to the need to reduce their water footprint and to acquire habits of efficient use of water.

In this context, canteens were distributed to students, in order to encourage the consumption of tap water at the expense of water that is sold in bottles.

In this activity, coordinated by teacher Anabela Cordeiro, the importance of urban solid waste management and the preservation of a clean and healthy school environment was highlighted, also exploring the artistic aspect (interdisciplinarity with the Visual Education subject of teacher Carla Coles ).

The students realized that, in the urban water cycle of the city of Olho, everything that reaches the rainwater is drained into the Ria Formosa and reaches the sea.

Thus, in groups and interactively with their teachers, they painted the school's gutters with motifs related to the sea and the need to preserve natural ecosystems, namely aquatic ones.

They drew, painted and left their message of environmental awareness: through those gutters the plastics that, invariably, will pollute the Ria Formosa and, consequently, the sea, must not pass.

“Young people will make the change!”, defends the project's coordinator, Anabela Cordeiro, a Physical Chemistry teacher at this school and developing a master's thesis entitled “Educating for a Water Sensitive City. Water Efficiency and Reduction of Carbon Emissions – Basic School 2,3 João da Rosa, Olhão”.

“Pedagogical tools are being developed that contribute to the formation of more aware and interventionist citizens, in the domains of the efficient use of water and the reduction of carbon emissions. This school year, several pedagogical actions have already been carried out, aimed at alerting young people to the need to reduce their water footprint, encourage the consumption of treated tap water and reduce the use of plastics in their daily lives", reveals the teacher at School EB 2,3 João da Rosa.

Educating for active citizenship, encouraging young people to pass on the message that "whatever falls on the ground will end up in the sea", was the main objective of this action, which also allowed the development of cooperation strategies between the school and the local/regional institutions for the promotion of sustainability.

This activity had the support of the Municipality of Olhão, the University of Algarve and the company Águas do Algarve.
