Nature Watchers in the Algarve progress in their careers and have already received badges and chevrons

Daniel Santos, the oldest nature watchman in the Algarve, was honored

The 28 Nature Watchers of the Algarve received badges and insignia attesting to their career progression, in a ceremony that took place yesterday, at the headquarters of the Ria Formosa Natural Park (PNRF), in Olhão.

This was an especially memorable moment for the Algarve's longest-serving security guards, who, with the career progression now made official, saw a desire that, in some cases, had been in existence for two decades.

A pragmatic example is that of Daniel Santos, the oldest guard at the PNRF, who “was honored and promoted to Principal Specialist Nature Watcher, the top of the guard career”, according to the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests (ICNF).

With 42 years of career, first lived in the Ria Formosa Natural Reserve and then in the Ria Formosa Natural Park, Daniel Santos is now at the end of his career, «but proud to leave his team equipped with new people and with the strength to continue a career of passion for nature».

ICNF nature watchers ensure, «in Classified Areas, the functions of preventive surveillance, environmental education, inspection and monitoring relating to the environment and natural resources, in the field of water, natural heritage and the conservation of nature and forests and surveillance of rural fires'.

Yesterday's ceremony was presided over by João Catarino, State Secretary for Nature Conservation, Forests and Spatial Planning and was attended by Nuno Banza, president of ICNF and Castelão Rodrigues, regional director of the institute.
