UAlg researcher Joanna Gonçalves wins Ocean Award from Mirpuri Foundation

Researcher received the title “The Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award of the Year 2021” and a monetary prize of five thousand euros

Joanna Melissa Gonçalves, researcher at the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) of the University of Algarve (UAlg), won the award Ocean Award of the Mirpuri Foundation.

The announcement was made on Saturday, June 5th, during the closing of the Annual Sailing Trophy that will take place at Clube Naval de Cascais.

The researcher, attending the first year of her PhD, competed with the project “EMERGING: Environmental Mixtures of Emerging contaminants Repercussions on Gonads and Impact on Next Generations".

Joanna Gonçalves received the title “The Mirpuri Foundation Ocean Award of the Year 2021”, a monetary prize of five thousand euros, “as well as international recognition of their contribution to a better world”, according to UAlg.

This is an international sustainability award, which aims to recognize and value excellence in the scientific community, rewarding the most innovative projects that have a positive impact on the health of the oceans.

“This global recognition will not only help me gain more visibility as a marine biologist, but also open up new paths and possible contacts with other world-renowned scientists,” said Joanna Gonçalves.

Her PhD project is the result of a passion that was born in her master's degree, with reproduction as a central theme.

In the researcher's opinion, "we should study reproduction more deeply, as without this function there are no future generations, putting the health of our ocean at risk," she added.

With the results she intends to obtain, Joanna Gonçalves hopes to be able to «give her contribution to international projects in favor of better solutions that contribute to the health of the ocean», she concluded.
