Albufeira promotes the formation of more lifeguards

José Carlos Rolo: “We hope to be able to count on the new graduates even in the current bathing season”

The Municipality of Albufeira wants to have more lifeguards and therefore promotes, in partnership with dedicated schools, a new course in this area. The admission tests took place on the 7th of June, with classes taking place from this Monday, the 14th, at the Municipal Swimming Pools (practical) and at the Secondary School (theoretical).

The lifeguard course is promoted by the Municipality of Albufeira, in partnership with Aquaform and with the guarantee of training quality from 4EMES, one of the first schools certified by the ISN – Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos. Over the last five years (2016-2020), 4EMES has already held about 140 lifeguard courses, focusing on the Center, Greater Lisbon and southern regions of the country.

The Municipality of Albufeira publicized this course, namely at the Albufeira Secondary School and hopes to have good results, in other words, "good professionals in water rescue on our beaches, as they are sorely lacking", says the councilor responsible for the beach area, Rogério Neto.

The official says that “Albufeira already has lifeguards of great professionalism, but they are not enough, as overtime should not be a practice in an activity that requires excellent physical and mental preparation”.

Future trainees must be over 18 years of age and have a suitable physical and mental profile, certified by a doctor.

The practical training will take place in the Municipal Swimming Pools of Albufeira and the theoretical part in the Secondary School of Albufeira.

Mayor José Carlos Rolo says he hopes that young people will be accepted in this training, qualifying for the lifeguard course, “which is a course certified and recognized by the Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos to provide services in public swimming pools, concessioned beaches and other places with aquatic practices with mandatory surveillance. We are a sea council, suitable for this training and these professionals are sorely missed. We hope to be able to count on the new graduates in the current bathing season”.

These courses have a high employability rate, so they are an excellent job opportunity for young people who will be able to work not only in seasonal periods, but increasingly throughout the year.

In Albufeira, the course starts next Monday, the 14th.
