Volunteer action removes 48 turtles from Lago do Jardim das Comunidade in Almancil

Turtles were destabilizing the functioning of this aquatic ecosystem

48 exotic turtles, wrongly released, were removed from this this wednesday, June 16th, of the Jardim das Comunidade Lake, during aa volunteer action.

This initiative was carried out by technicians from the Municipality of Loulé (Division of Climate Action and Circular Economy, Division of Green Spaces and Water Efficiency Office), with the collaboration of the Municipal Fire Department of Loulé and a group of students from University of the Algarve.

Turtles were destabilizing the functioning of this aquatic ecosystem, and the action also led to the removal of garbage from the lake.

Also involved in this initiative were the Marine and Environmental Research Center (CIMA), the Algarve Sea Science Center (CCMAR), the Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) and the Lagos Zoo, the park where removed turtles will be forwarded.

This action is part of the collaboration project of the University of Algarve with the Municipality of Loulé, to implement actions in line with the Policy on Climate Action and Environmental Protection of the municipality of Loulé.

The Garden of Communities of Almancil has been the target of several interventions with a view to improving water and energy management and enhancing its ecosystem services, namely its carbon sequestration capacity.

The Loulé autarchy intends that this garden «becomes an urban green space of reference, continuing to contribute to the quality of life of the people who visit it, appealing to the population so that each citizen is an active agent of surveillance of the Jardim das Comunidade, a of the county's green areas that are important to preserve”.
