Silves launches the 1st edition of the João de Deus National Literary Award

The jury for the 1st Edition of the Award will be composed of João Pedro Mésseder, Violante Magalhães and Catherine Dumas

Silves will present this Saturday, May 22, at 10:00 am, at the Salão Nobre da Câmara Municipal. the 1st edition of the João de Deus National Literary Award. 

The initiative will be attended by Rosa Palma, mayor of Silves, the chairman of the Board of Directors of Caixa de Crédito Agrícola of São Bartolomeu de Messines and São Marcos da Serra Carlos Vargas and the Regional Director of Culture of the Algarve Adriana Freire Nogueira .

By instituting the João de Deus National Prize, the municipality says that “it intends to honor the memory of this distinguished writer born in São Bartolomeu de Messines, whose work represents a heritage of the highest importance for national and regional culture, and is a source of pride for all the Silvenses, as well as distinguishing and disseminating the literary creation of authors with a work published in Portuguese».

The prize will be held every two years and is intended for authors over 18 years of age, national or foreign, residing in Portugal, who present a work edited in a book, in Portuguese, and whose first edition occurred in the two calendar years preceding the year in which the contest takes place.

The prize is awarded, alternately, in the fields of poetry and prose. The first edition will be dedicated to poetry. It will only distinguish one work in the competition and it does not admit honorable mentions. The winner of the contest will be awarded 10 thousand euros.

The jury for the 1st Edition of the Award will be composed of João Pedro Mésseder, Violante Magalhães and Catherine Dumas.

Applications for the João de Deus I Poetry 2021 National Award take place between the 22nd of May and the 2nd of July 2021.
