Dona Niza Arinto 2019, a regional white wine from the Algarve, from producer Obserpolis, Unipessoal, was the big winner of the XIII Algarve Wine Contest, which took place on May 6th, at the Convento de S. José, in Lagoa.

This was the first time that the big winner of this contest was a white wine.

In all, 42 wines were awarded. Of these, 28 received Silver Medals, 15 were awarded Gold Medals and one, Dona Niza Arinto 2019, with the Great Gold Medal.

Here what were all the winners.

«Most of the wines in the competition without medals had a score framed in the “Silver Medal” (equal to or above 82 points), which reflects the qualitative evolution of the Algarve wines», according to the Algarve Wine Commission (CVA), who organized the contest.

However, being this «a contest ofInitially, the number of medals is limited to 30% of the wines entered».

The autochthonous Algarve variety Negra-Mole «was highlighted in the competition, with a distinguished series for the Algarve variety, achieving excellent results: 3 Gold Medals (2 reds and 1 rosé Negra Mole).

135 Algarve wines were tasted, «between whites, rosés and reds of excellent quality», from 32 producers, which represents an increase of 20% in the number of wines registered, and of approximately 30% in the number of participating producers, in comparison to the last edition'.

«The judges highlighted the excellent organization of the XIII Algarve Wine Contest and the significant evolution of the quality of Algarve Wines. The Algarve Wine Contest aims to award distinctions to bottled wines from the Algarve. It is intended to stimulate the production of quality wines, as well as to promote the best wines produced in the Algarve region», concluded the CVA.
