Alvor's old fish auction will be transformed into a dynamic space

Requalification work will cost 238 euros

The Old auction of Alvor will be reclassified and «transformed into a multi-purpose space for cultural dynamism».

The Municipality of Portimão will invest around 238 thousand euros in the project “Antiga lota de Alvor – Espaço Polivalente”, which aims to “restore, conserve and dynamize the building, making it viable in terms of heritage enhancement and cultural dynamisation, as a contribution to the perpetuation of knowledge and transmission of knowledge of the local community», revealed the municipality.

All of this will be done “in conjunction with the future Interpretive Center of the Salva-vida de Alvor, which is already under construction”.

"The cultural dynamization of both spaces is the main objective of the project, which takes into account retired fishermen who daily seek out the old fish market as a point of contemplation and socialization," according to the Chamber.

"This appreciation also symbolizes a positive reinforcement in the municipality's tourism offer and entrepreneurship, as the old auction is one of the calling cards for the large thousands of tourists looking for Alvor," he added.

Also contemplated is «the rehabilitation of memories and histories of fishing and the sale of fish at auction, as well as some local gastronomic and consumption habits, as well as making known the surroundings and riverside landscape in terms of the important natural heritage and biodiversity of the Ria of Alvor'.

On the way, we will evoke the history of the evolution of the riverside area of Alvor, regarding «its occupation over time and the important memory spaces that existed there, such as the old stowage, the fishermen's work warehouses or the first taverns, now converted into restaurants».

At the same time, the municipality of Portimo will design an annual program of activities, «among which walks along the riverside, exhibitions of local fishing arts with explanations by people related to the subject and the creation of a fish market that recreates the fish market environment that for several decades it animated this space».

At the same time, “direct contact with the fishing community, gathering spaces and gastronomic demonstrations, musical and scenic initiatives, etc.” will be promoted.

«The municipal plans are also part of the municipal plans to integrate the old fish market and the surrounding area in tourist circuits related to cultural and nature heritage, maritime, fishing and environmental sustainability or ecotourism, creating conditions for short walks commented on the Ria de Alvor on themes of its history and experiences, or centered on the rich local biodiversity, which will make it possible to raise awareness for the sustainable development of this destination», concluded the Câmara de Portimão.

The rehabilitation of the Alvor auction will have an 85% contribution, in the amount of 234 thousand euros, under the MAR2020 programme.
