Algarve goes to Fitur to promote the region at a "key moment" for the recovery of tourism

"Fitur assumes particular relevance, considering the current health context and the key moment of deconfinement"

The Algarve will be present at Fitur – International Tourism Fair, from May 19th to 23rd, in Madrid, promoting creative tourism, nature and outdoor activities, at a time that is “key” for the recovery of the tourism sector.

«Fitur is an opportunity to continue the international promotion of the destination and attract tourists from different origins, namely from Spain», says the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).

According to INE, this country was in the top 3 of the markets that send tourists to the Algarve in 2019, namely by proximity, having been responsible that year for more than 407 thousand guests (+ 14,3% compared to 2018) that they generated 1,13 million overnight stays (+8,9% than in 2018).

For João Fernandes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, «as this is a fair aimed at professionals in the sector and the general public, Fitur assumes particular relevance, considering the current health context and the key moment of lack of confinement. There is also the fact that the event will take place in Spain, as, due to its proximity, it is a very significant tourist market for the region».

«Since the pace of tourist demand in the Algarve is expected to be marked by visitors from the wider domestic market, it should be noted that, in addition to benefiting from the land borders with Spain, the region has direct flights from Madrid and Barcelona and, already, from July onwards, it will add direct connections between Bilbao and Faro», says the RTA.

Globally, Fitur will make it possible to generate international visibility to the region and support the development of tourism beyond the bathing season, considering that the offer at the destination follows current travel trends for 2021, which point to a greater demand for more authentic experiences and environments of Nature.

The region was elected the "Best Beach Destination in Europe in 2020" by the "World Travel Awards", the only one that has revalidated the recognition seven times (six of them consecutive), and has consolidated its position as a destination of choice in other tourist products .

Among the main reasons for visiting the Algarve are Creative Tourism, in which visitors join the local community to learn and participate in activities related to traditions, culture and heritage, or Nature Tourism that allows them to enjoy experiences in rural spaces or in low-density territories (inland and on the coast), such as hiking.

The “Best Hiking Destination in Europe”, elected by the “European Best Destinations” is in the region: the Seven Valleys Suspended trail. Sport Tourism also reveals the destination's ability to attract sports such as golf, nautical activities or cycling, with the Algarve leading the offer of cycling routes. The «Cycling Route Guide», published recently by Turismo do Algarve, includes over 20 tourist trails to promote the use of bicycles during the holidays.

«The Algarve is strategically committed to promoting slow travel, experiences based on local traditions and customs and outdoor activities in the countryside and on the coast. These are, therefore, some of the themes that we are going to take to Fitur, duly framed in the offer that is at the destination. At a key moment of tourism recovery, in which we continue to receive reservations for flights from different origins, namely from Europe, it is very important to be present at this event and make known the main tourist products that meet current travel motivations.” concludes the person responsible for the tourist entity.
