Algarvian socialists question the government about high-speed fixed net in the region

Idea is to help attract so-called "digital nomads"

This Friday, April 9th, the socialist deputies elected by the Algarve questioned the Government about plans for a fixed high-speed internet coverage in the region, in order to attract companies that intend to leave large urban centers and offer better conditions. to 'digital nomads'.

In a question addressed to the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing, Luís Graça, Jamila Madeira, Joaquina Matos, Ana Passos and Francisco Oliveira refer that the «difficulties imposed for reasons of public health by the various confinements sharpened the ingenuity of companies that used digital to maintain contact with customers and sales even with the physical door of their establishments closed'.

«The process of dissemination of remote work has accelerated», in which «digital nomads are the new workers – tourists», say the parliamentarians, who point out that «in the Algarve, in particular in the Costa Vicentina councils of Aljezur and Vila do Bispo and in the interior areas of the region and outside the large urban centers, these remote workers are increasingly frequent where they spend long periods with a very positive impact on the local economy».

For PS deputies, "providing good fiber optic coverage throughout the peripheral country is absolutely critical so that this economic movement of setting up companies in low density territories and attracting remote workers can also occur in Portugal."

«This challenge is particularly relevant for the Algarve», defend the Algarve socialists, recalling that, along with the Alentejo, it is one of the «regions of the country with the lowest national rate of fixed high-speed internet coverage», according to the ANACOM data.

"In the Algarve, only 62,1% of households can install services supported by fiber optics, while the national average is 83%", the parliamentarians point out, considering that they are "values far below the national average and that constitute an effective disadvantage" , both "within the scope of territorial cohesion" and "in stimulating the digitization of the economy".

In this sense, the elected socialists want to know «what plans the Government has for the Algarve to overcome the deficit in high-speed internet coverage and present itself as a territory of excellence to attract companies that intend to leave the big cities and offer better and better conditions for receiving digital nomads'.
