Olhão celebrated the 25th of April with the inauguration of the Salgueiro Maia Garden

The garden is located in the Horta Dr. Pádua district, in the center of the city of Olho.

The municipality of Olhão marked the 25th of April, with the inauguration of Jardim Salgueiro Maia, in the Horta Dr. Pádua district, in the center of the city of Olhão.

The ceremonies, «this year simpler due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic», began with the raising of flags, in front of the Town Hall.

The commemorations continued in the Horta Dr. Pádua district, where the mayor of the municipality António Pina and the captain of Abril Carlos Beato unveiled a plaque in homage by the locals to the military Salgueiro Maia, the name given to the garden in this ceremony.

Carlos Beato, commander of the 6th platoon of the Practical Cavalry School in Operation End of the Regime, himself one of the April captains and right-hand man in the carnation revolution, evoked the man with whom "he had the privilege of sharing many journeys" , saying that "he was the type of man and the type of military man who lived to serve and not to serve himself."

The officer from Abril congratulated the Municipality of Olhão for the "happy and opportune initiative" to give the name Salgueiro Maio to "this beautiful, expressive and significant space".

At the inauguration of this new leisure and sports space, António Pina revealed that «the choice of a garden to bear the name of Salgueiro Maia was deliberate, because Abril and democracy are values that have to be “watered” and lived in community».

The mayor also affirms that it is necessary "to remind the younger generations who Salgueiro Maia was and what the 25th of April represents in terms of liberation from the oppression of the dictatorship."
