Lagos gained hundreds of trees during “Green Week”

Municipality planted nearly three hundred trees and offered 500 to the townspeople

The municipality of Lagos gained new trees, which were planted during the first week of spring, which was marked by several planting actions spread throughout the municipality.

During the “Green Week”, the way Lagos found to celebrate World Tree Day, which was marked on 21 March, 273 trees were planted “to beautify public spaces and improve the population's quality of life”.

«These initiatives had the involvement of the Municipal Executive, Parish Councils, Municipal Civil Protection Service, professionals from the Lagos Health Center, Sapadores Florestais and volunteers who joined this campaign», according to the Câmara de Lagos, which promoted the initiatives.

In addition to these planting actions, «about 500 juvenile trees were also distributed to citizens who visited the XXI Century Building Paços do Concelho Building, Parish Councils and Markets of Bensafrim and Barão de S. João, with the objective of to raise awareness so that, individually and in safety, each one can contribute to a greener environment».

This means that there are “773 new trees in Lagos”.

In Parque da Cidade, as part of the application for the ECO Freguesias XXI project of the Parish Council of S. Gonçalo, identification plates (in biodegradable PLA material) were placed next to the various native trees there, such as carob trees, fig trees, strawberry trees, pomegranate trees , among others.

«The “Green Week” also featured an exhibition of work by users of the homes of Santa Casa da Misericórdia in the Mercado de Santo Amaro. The school community was not forgotten either, with the motto being launched for the students of the EB1 schools in Lagos. The schools in Bairro Operário, Santa Maria, Ameijeira, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Chinicato and Odiáxere took up the challenge of celebrating the trees in the best possible way, with a total of 24 classes and hundreds of students participating”, concluded the Câmara de Lagos.​
