Conceição Cabrita resigned today from his mandate as mayor of Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA) «with immediate effect». following his arrest, as part of the so-called “Triangle Operation”, carried out by the Judiciary Police on Tuesday.

In a laconic note, the Chamber of VRSA announced that the decision of the social-democratic mayor, elected in 2017 for the position, was taken «with a view to ensuring the normal functioning of the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António».

The mayor was one of four people arrested under this operation, which had a national dimension and involved searches not only in the VRSA Chamber, but in the suspects' house and elsewhere in this city, in Leiria, Ourém and Lisbon.

In addition to Conceição Cabrita, an official from the municipality of Vilarreal and two businessmen, one of whom Carlos de Matos, owner of the company Saint Germain, were arrested.

It was precisely a deal between the Chamber and this company, the sale by direct adjustment of land in Monte Gordo, which prompted the investigation, which culminated in the arrests.
