Citizens delivered a letter to the Câmara de Lagos that asks to protect the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade

This was the last step of a campaign developed by Jonathan Silva

On the morning of Thursday, April 8, a group of citizens delivered an open letter, signed by more than 500 people, in which they asked Hugo Pereira, Mayor of Lagos, to help protect the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade of private interests.

This was the last step in a campaign developed by Jonathan Silva.

Signatories to this letter include lawyers, entrepreneurs, investors, cycle teachers and university professors, dentists, psychologists, sociologists, architects, researchers, environmental engineers, agronomists, retired members of the City Council, as well as celebrities such as singer Dino D'Santiago and actress Rita Blanco.

"Everyone should have full access to these cliffs," says Jonathan. “They are world famous. It's not fair that private interests can come to control who can walk over them," he adds.

Jonathan's campaign to protect the Ponta de Piedade cliffs had three simple requirements: secure access to the cliffs through the removal of the fences, the withdrawal of any current development plans for the cliffs, or building permits, and a public consultation for the community can decide with the municipality what should happen to the area.

According to this movement, at a recent meeting, mayor Hugo Pereira agreed to remove the fences, despite not "publicly committing to a date to tear down the fences".
