The Town Councils of Vila do Bispo, Aljezur, Odemira and Sines, whose territories are part of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, want the return of recreational fishing, «expressing the feeling of the populations residing in these municipalities».

In a joint note, the mayors of Aljezur, Odemira, Sines and Vila do Bispo defend "that recreational fishing should be seen as a sporting activity that helps the family economy, but also contributes to keeping the mind and body healthy."

Thus, "they demand that, in a responsible and considered way, these activities can be resumed in the context of a responsible de-confinement, if necessary phased by parishes, allowing residents to return to fishing or shelling in their own parish."

«The collective effort that has been made by the people of these councils, who have been deprived of a series of activities for the sake of a greater motive, health and human life, must be recognized. The letter appeals and tries to sensitize the Government to allow a gradual shift away from recreational fishing, while maintaining the ban on movement between municipalities», he adds.

"This measure, in addition to the cultural issue rooted in these populations, is essential for the well-being of many families, at a time when, in addition to financial difficulties, there are still concerns about the mental health of many people", they conclude.
