The University of Algarve (UAlg) will carry out a cycle of webinars on “Smart Cities” which will take place between March and May and is open to the general public.

«With this cycle of webinars it emphasizes the vision of a renewed role for universities – and, in particular, a hybrid academic profile – in the link between scientific knowledge, technology and society. Multiple examples of models and objectives, different proposals and specific adaptation processes are presented, taking into account the contexts in which it operates», says UAlg.

According to the organizing committee, «the intention is to distinguish the current Intelligent Governance that exists in the Algarve region, which already triggers greater ease in the use of public services, investments in technology and transparency in data and in the use of city resources».

The aim, they say, “is to encourage the encounter between key player, institutions and citizens to share the technical and scientific challenges and the solutions found, triggering an open discussion».

Digital and connected cities, holders of cutting edge technology and open data, are considered competitive in a context of global economy. In addition to the need for digital connectivity, Service Design, Internet of Things (IoT) and Big Data analysis tools are required.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are used for the collection and analysis of a large amount of information generated by multiple data sources in the city, such as sensor networks, traffic systems and public devices. citizens.

According to the organizers of this cycle of webinars, “this data can be used in innovative and creative ways to create integrated applications that improve the city's services and the use of its resources, contributing to a better quality of life for citizens”.

The initiative will have the participation of around three dozen national speakers and important experts in Sustainable and Smart Cities. It is, at the same time, an example of active learning methodologies that are triggered in the postgraduate course in Sustainable Cities, taught at the Superior Institute of Engineering of the University of Algarve.

The sessions will always take place on Saturdays, from 14 pm to 00 pm, and are already scheduled for the following dates: 16, 00, 6 and 13 March (see program here); 10th, 17th and 24th of April (see program here) and May 22 (see program here).

The initiative, which is supported by the Center for Research in Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being (CinTurs), is free and open to the general public, upon registration for each session, and can be done here
